Lately I have been getting a lot of questions from people asking if “detox” or “cleanse” products are healthy. I figured that others are probably wondering the same thing, and decided to write a quick post about it.
First of all, it’s a good question. Most of us are aware that our world is becoming increasingly populated and thus, more polluted. Based on variations in our lifestyles, some of us probably have higher levels of toxins circulating around in our body than others, i.e city dwellers vs. country folk.
So the question comes down to whether or not a detox program is necessary to “cleanse” the body of these toxins.
My answer is “no”.
While I do think many of us could do a better job of reducing exposure to toxins, I don’t believe a detox program is necessary. I also think that some of these programs can be counter-productive to your health. Often they require you to fast for several days while drinking some sort of lemon water or other clear liquid drink. Some also include laxative products, which if not used carefully, can be harmful to your digestive system. Lastly, I question the quality of these products.
My point is not to discourage you from being concerned about toxins, I definitely think it’s worth concern. I just believe there is a better way to go about it. When we treat our bodies with care and respect, they do a pretty good job at detoxifying all on their own.

13 Tips to Naturally “detoxify” Your Body:
- Eat more cruciferous vegetables. Cruciferous vegetables contain phytochemicals (healthy plant chemicals) that assist in detoxification of carcinogens. Cruciferous vegetables include: broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, brussels sprouts, bok choy, kale, arugula, collard greens, kohlrabi, turnips, rutabaga, and radish.
- Make water your primary beverage. Oh and be sure to drink clean water, filtered tap water is best. Try to drink 8 glasses each day or enough that your pee stays clear or light yellow.
- Take a break from all caffeine, alcohol, and sugar for at least one week.
- Increase your fiber intake. Eat more beans, whole grains, and raw fruits and vegetables. *note- it is best to increase fiber intake slowly. If you don’t normally eat a lot of fiber and then suddenly increase your intake, you may experience some bloating, cramping and gas. It is helpful to drink more water when you are increasing your fiber intake.
- Purchase organic food.
- Decrease your intake of processed foods. Read labels – avoid anything with an ingredient list that looks like a science experiment.
- Sweat more! Increase the intensity of your workouts or try using a steam bath periodically.
- Use natural body care products.
- Take a yoga class, or two, or three (just not in one day)! The forward folds and twists in yoga will help massage your inner organs and stimulate digestion.
- Exfoliate your skin with washcloth or natural bristled shower brush when taking your next shower.
- Add some houseplants to the most lived in areas of your home. This will help clean the air.
- Get out in the sun and fresh air!
- If you smoke, make an effort to stop.
