Did you know that 60% of the human body is made up of water? Pretty amazing huh?
Every system and every body tissue depends on water for survival. That is why it is crucial you put clean water in your body every day. Even though tap water appears clean, most of it is not. Many of us unknowingly consume contaminated water.
A recent 3 year analysis done by the Environmental Working Group found 316 contaminants in the drinking water supplied to 256 million Americans in 45 states. 202 of the contaminants found did not have regulations or safety standards for drinking water. The remaining 114 are regulated by the EPA.
The type of contaminants found came from factory farm waste, pesticides, fertilizers, sewage, urban runoff, industrial chemicals, and by products of the water treatment process. Not exactly the kind of things you want to be consuming, right? We have no idea what kind of impact these have on our health. From my guess, it can’t be good.
This may get you wondering if you should be drinking bottled water instead of tap water. The answer is a big NO. Contaminants have been found in bottled water too. Plus, bottled water companies are not required to publish water quality reports, whereas tap water suppliers are. Bottled water is also bad for the environment because it wastes so much plastic.
The best solution is to get a filter for your tap water. There are many different types available from free standing pitchers to whole house systems. The price is reflected in their capabilities. At the very least, I recommend a basic pitcher carbon filter. Brita and Pur are good brands. This is a good place to start, but if you want even cleaner water, I suggest you look into reverse osmosis systems. They are supposed to get rid of the most contaminants. The only problem is that use a lot more water than they produce, which is an environmental concern.
*Important – Change your filters on time! An old filter loses its function and may harbor bacteria.
For clean water on the go, fill a stainless steel or other BPA free reusable bottle with your filtered tap water. You will never need bottled water again! My favorite water bottle is Kleen Kanteen.
Are you Getting Enough Water?
Most adults need 8 to 10 cups each day. The best way to find out if you are hydrated is to look at your urine. If it is pale yellow and clear, you are hydrated. Dark yellow, orange, or amber urine is a sign of dehydration. Honor your built-in thirst system, its there for a reason!
